"Mom, does Jesus drink alcohol?"

This from my 5-yr-old, yes my 5-yr-old, last night after scriptures. I didn't know how to respond. I didn't even think Israel knew what alcohol was. He insisted that there was a picture of Jesus drinking alcohol. Did you see it at Church I ask? he's not sure. So, I ask if he knows what alcohol is, but not getting a straight answer I give him a not straight answer back about wine and how in Biblical times wine was possibly grape juice.

I know, pitiful, but I SO wasn't prepared for the question and I don't know myself anyhow. I'm afraid of what Israel is going to ask next.

Help!

Yes, Jesus drank alcohol. So did Joseph Smith, until he received revelation that wine should no longer be used for the sacrament because enemies would try poison him (or something like that). I learned this in my D&C class. I wish I could remember more details, but I can't. As for what you should tell Israel, I have no idea. Good luck!

We were told in Jesus's day, they were unable to prevent the fermenting of grape juice so consequently it probably was alcoholic. It also wasn't a commandment at the time. Alcohol now is definitely different.
